Job Summary:

We are seeking a hands-on Biological Data Engineer to join our growing team as our first dedicated engineering hire. You will design, build, and run the data foundation that powers our research, owning the ingestion pipelines, storage, and validation that the science depends on. Working with the computational team on the shared compute and cloud environment, you will keep these systems moving our drug discovery work from raw experiments to clear biological insight. The role also offers opportunities to engage directly with the underlying science. This is a full-time, hybrid role based in Montreal, reporting to the Head of Computational Biology.

Key Responsibilities:

·       Build the Data Platform: Design and maintain robust pipelines for ingesting, storing, and orchestrating experimental biological data, ensuring full data provenance so that any scientific result can be traced back to its exact source.

·       Support Research Workflows & Deployments: Support the shared environments where the team runs its analyses, manages compute workloads, and tracks experiments. Create reliable pathways for packaging and deploying trained models into drug discovery work.

·       Establish the Engineering Foundation: Set the team's software engineering standards. Use Infrastructure-as-Code and CI/CD to make code easy to test, review, and ship safely. Build the automated tooling and guardrails that keep infrastructure out of the team's way.

·       Partner on Computational Research: Work directly with computational scientists on challenges that bridge software engineering and computational biology, with opportunities to contribute to the core research by scaling algorithms, optimizing models, and applying your expertise to biological problems.

Ideal Candidate:

Required

·       Education & Experience: You hold a BSc in computer science or software engineering, or an MSc or PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field. You have at least 2 years of experience in data engineering, platform infrastructure, or scientific computing, and are eager for an opportunity to take full ownership of a system in a startup environment.

·       Core Languages: You have strong proficiency in Python, SQL, and shell scripting. You write code others can read, run, and extend.

·       Cloud Foundation: You have hands-on cloud experience (GCP, AWS, or equivalent) and are comfortable working in a shared cloud environment. You take a pragmatic approach to building reliable environments and are happy to partner with the team on architecture decisions.

·       Ownership & Collaboration: You are a pragmatic builder who wants end-to-end ownership of a system. You work independently, and you want to work close to the biology alongside the scientists.

Nice to Have

·       Workflow & Pipeline Design: You have built ETL pipelines and worked with a workflow orchestrator such as Airflow, Prefect, Dagster, or Nextflow.

·       Modern Infrastructure: You have worked with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, Pulumi, CDK) and container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS, or equivalent).

·       Compute & ML Support: You are familiar with managing compute workloads and serving models from containers.

·       Domain Knowledge: You bring working knowledge of molecular biology and biological data types, or prior exposure to drug discovery or biotech environments.
